REVIEWS: Babyliss 2165BU Pro Hair Crimper

DSC_0777

Lately I've been getting a little bit bored with my hair, I wouldn't quite call it a 'rut' just yet, but it's getting close. I've been attempting to grow it out long for a while now, but it's so difficult to resist that urge to chop off a few bits here and there. I'm seriously addicted to cutting my hair, and I'm aware that I have a problem! I do miss having plenty of short, textured layers in amongst longer hair, sigh.

Instead of getting too hung up about that though, I've been trying a few different things with my hair. Crimping isn't something I've done since an avant-garde look I created for a hairdressing assessment at college. Anyways, I was reminiscing over some old photos I had and wondered what it would look like on my turquoise hair.

So I dug out my Babyliss 2165BU Pro Hair Crimper, started adding a couple of crimps into my hair in random sections and things just went from there!

 DSC_0585

It's one of those styling tools that just doesn't get used daily so ends up hidden away under the bed collecting dust, a bit like my hair curler!

 DSC_0591

 DSC_0588

The plates are ceramice and it comes with 6 heat settings with the highest going up to a scorching 210 celsius, perfect for thicker hair types. The ceramic ensures the plating doesn't stick to the plating but one thing I really don't like about these is the location of the heat setting dial. Take a look above and you'll see the dial is on the inside instead of the outside. So if you need to change the temperature, you need to take care not burn your fingers.

On the plus side it's incredibly quick to heat up, I give it 30 seconds and I can begin the crimping session!

 DSC_0806

Back to the plating, and as you can see from the photos, it's not wide and wavy. The bumps are tightly packed resulting in 80s-esque super-tight crimps, as opposed to softer waves. If you check back on my Topshop Velvet Lips post you'll see that I went crimp crazy, my hair looking a bit poodle-ish!

The lasting power is surprisingly good, for me it lasts all day without needing to spray on some hairspray. I'm not sure how much of that is to do with the crimper, and how much is to do with my naturally wavy hair but either way: it works for me.

 DSC_0817

I love how crimpers add extra texture to the hair. It looks incredibly striking, whether you go all out or a little more subtle.

Babyliss' 2165BU Pro Hair Crimper is currently priced at £19.99 in Boots, a pretty cheap way to experiment with a fun new look.

Extremely Damaged, Weak, Stringy, Mushy, Gummy, Elasticy hair? Aphogee may be the Answer!

DSC_6929

 DSC_6924

In my previous post I talked about how I managed to colour my hair this brilliant turquoise, I also talked about a mystery product that was essential to salvage my hair from the destruction that is bleaching. Without further ado, I present to you Aphogee's 'Two Step Protein Treatment'.

Just so you can understand how highly I rate this stuff, let me tell you a little about the condition of my hair prior to using this. After bleaching my hair  I found it to be quite stringy looking and elasticy whilst wet. It looked quite mushy and gummy. It got to the point where if I tugged on my wet hair, it would just dissolve into my finger. Describing the condition it was in is tough, I hope that made at least some sort of sense! When my hair did eventualy dry out though, it was extremely brittle.

But this is exactly what bleach does, particularly if you've bleached your hair several times in quick succession. Your poor hair can only take so much punishment, and mine had really had enough. Then a friend who gets her Afro Carribean hair relaxed told me about Aphogee. The symptoms she talked about pretty matched what was happening to my hair, so she suggested I give it a try. I'm glad I did!

It's exactly what the name suggests, a two-step protein treatment for the hair. It isn't for those with dry hair, but it's catered perfectly for those with overprocessed, severely damaged hair. You simply apply it to towel-dried hair, use heat until it's dried and hardened on the hair, give it a good rinse then get on with your conditioning business. The bottle says to use it every 6 weeks where required but I got a little greedy and used it twice in a week (don't try this at home folks!)

I got mine for a snip at £18 for 16oz, I say a snip - fully realising the hair-based pun! - because this stuff has been a life saver! You might be thinking: 'You only described one step!' and you'd be quite right. It's called 'Two-step' because Aphogee have a matching conditioner to go with it, however my friend tells me it isn't all it's cracked up to be, so I just used my own.

First Thoughts?

This stuff is SO weird! I had the obligatory sniff in the store (it's the done thing right?) and it smells like nothing I've come across before. It's a strong herbally scent but think more 'Overgrown, unkempt garden' than 'Herbal Essences'! On top of that, the formula is a sort of runny egg-yolk colour. I knew this could get messy!

USAGE

Aphogee recommend shampooing first, detangling the hair and then applying however I didn't bother detangling. It's just impossible for me to detangle without conditioner and Johnson's 'No More Tears Detangling Spray'. So I just applied straight after shampooing and towel drying.

It really did get messy! I saturated my hair with the runny, yellow goo then used my hooded dryer to completely dry it all out. As the drying process tales place you can feel the hair getting stickier, you need to go through that phase and wait until the hair is bone dry and that stickiness is gone. If you get impatient you'll find you've just wasted a lot of product for nothing!

And patience is key with this stuff, as I used as hooded dryer it took just over an hour for my hair to completely dry out - you can use a standard hair dryer too but it will take significantly longer. You can tell it's dry as your hair becomes really hard and stiff, if you were to bend the hair slightly it'd just snap off (please don't test this out!) For this reason I would recommend you DO NOT put your hair into a bun or a pony whilst you've got this on. Also make sure you limit how much you touch your hair, it is so vulnerable at this point that you could easily lose chunks of hair if not careful.

After it's completely dried and past the sticky stage, I jumped into the shower and gave it a good rinse without touching the hair. Once I felt it was all washed out, I applied my Organix Macadamia Oil Conditioner and did my conditioning thang.

RESULTS

The results are amazing, I whole heartedly believe that the only reason my hair hasn't upped sticks and left already is down to this stuff. It's been bleached so many times of late that each strand must be suffering a severe identity crisis!

Now my hair feels stronger and easier to comb than it was before I bleached it. I couldn't have imagined my hair would be in a better condition after bleaching! It definitely isn't in perfect condition just yet, it looks healthy all over but with a few brittle areas dotted around. I think with the next application the brittleness will be sorted, but I'll report back!

I think it's also important to mention that Aphogees doesn't soften the hair, rather it makes it stronger by putting back all the protein that's been lost through bleaching. I was lost for words (rarer than a solar eclipse!) after rinsing it out, my hair had lost the mushyness and the horrible stringy, elasticy feeling I had before and whilst combing the breakage was severely reduced. All this from just one usage means I couldn't care less about the smell, the formula or the general messyness in application - it's a small price to pay!

My recommendation? If your hair is really damaged to the point where you're thinking of just giving up on it, get out there and buy this! It may well be your last throw of the dice,  but as far as I'm concerned £18 is dirt cheap for the hair equivalent of a defibrillator! It'll bring your hair back to life, and shock you in the process!

I purchased mine from Paul's Hair World in Manchester. However, you can find this stuff in most good Afro-Carribean Beauty Shops or on good old eBay.

OUTFITS: Little Ben and the RARE Kimono

DSC_5831

Hey lahs

I've got a massive back log of posts that I really need to bang out, so here's the first! Those of you who follow me on Instagram will know that my hair isn't turquoise anymore, but is in fact now an indigo colour. Even then, that will soon change once again! More on that will come in future posts...

Anyway, over the past few weeks I've still been feeling Kimonos, it's now at that stage where I wonder if I'll ever stop loving them! I've been scouring the interweb for more of these gorgeously flowing printed fabrics.

This one was purchased from eBay and is manufactured by a company called RARE, they can be found on the ASOS website and sometimes even in Topshop.

The print was love at first sight, I'm not too sure what it's supposed to be but it looks a cross between a galaxy print and an animal print with a few flowers thrown in for good measure! The
huge swirls of blue and various shades of orange make this sounds like something that should definitely not work, but somehow it does!

I paired it with my burgundy tunic which is quite long and so appears as though it's a mini bodycon dress!

Little Ben!

I first featured Little Ben on the blog a couple of years ago now, I bought him from my then favourite place for jewellery - TOPSHOP - but he was paired up with a hideous looking silver tube chain. It so disgusted me, it just broke my heart that this cute little thing was attached to something so... so... URGH that I just had to rescue him. I hope you'll agree that he looks much happier with his new partner!

 DSC_5855

I spotted this little beaut whilst in a charity shop that funds the cat sanctuary where I got my new kitties from. I was waiting for the centre to prepare everything and this caught my eye, at first I thought it was a Rolex! It turned out that it's Citron but still, it's pretty good for £3.50, no?

I did a bit of Googling and found a Rolex that looks just like this, so it wasn't just me! It's the Oyster Perpetual Datejust, one can only dream of having a Rolex but every now and then I catch a glimpse of one out of the corner of my eye...

DIY: How to Ombre Dark Hair Turquoise!

TurquoiseOmbreHair3

Hello dolls!

This post is long overdue.

Ever since I first featured my Turquoise Ombre on Instagram, Twitter and the Blog last year I've had countless ladies asking me all about it. They want to know who did it, how, what colour(s) I used, is it easy to maintain? I'll answer all these questions and more in this post!

But first, Turquoise hair is truly gorgeous. The colour itself is dreamy, mythical and enchanting. I initially Ombre'd or Dip Dyed due to an odd dream I had last year, where I was a mermaid living in Dubai! The sea had spilled over on to the streets and I was doing these weird somersaults in the water. My hair was coloured in a mixture of turquoise and blue, and as soon as I woke I thought: 'I have got to do this!' So here I am, with nymph-like hair!

So Who did it then?

Me: DIY baby!

In this post I will go through what I did and each product that was used to bleach the hair, colour it turquoise and also I'll add in a little mini FAQ. I'll mention the various dyes I have used along with photos of how they looked on my hair.

Here we go!

 DIYTurquoiseOmbre

Left to Right: La Riche Directions in Turquoise, Crazy Color in Bubblegum Blue, Manic Panic Amplified Formula in Atomic Turquoise, Jerome Russell Bblonde Cream Peroxide 12% 40 Vol, Jerome Russell Bblonde High Life Powder Bleach and a tinting brush.

Please do not be alarmed by this long line-up of products! In a way it's a bit like cooking: it looks it's going to be so complicated because you've got loads of ingredients, but once you get into it you realise how easy it actually is! Besides, I didn't use all of the dyes at the same time!

THE BLEACHING PROCESS
 DSC_5986

As my hair is very dark, black verging on dark brown, I purchased 12% 40 VOL peroxide in order to lift out as much of the natural pigment as I could in order to apply the dye.

A little run down on the types of peroxide out there on the market:

6% Peroxide or 20 VOL - Lifts hair upto 1 to 2 shades lighter

9% Peroxide or 30 VOL - Lifts hair upto 2 to 3 shades lighter

12% Peroxide or 40 VOL - Lifts hairs  upto 3 to 4 shades lighter

The higher strength the peroxide, the more damaging it can be to the hair. I approached three different salons who all declined to bleach my hair as they were worried bleaching would damage it badly. The last thing they want is to be sued by an unhappy woman with clumps of hair randomly breaking off, ha! So if they weren't prepared to do it, I'd have to do it myself. DIY style!

Fortunately I do have a bit of a background in hair dressing, particularly colouring, so I drew on all of my acquired knowledge. As my hair is fairly short, I only used one packet of bleach and one bottle of the peroxide. If your hair is longer, you may want to consider using more.

Now onto how I bleached it. You empty the contents of the powder sachet and peroxide bottle into a bowl and mix it all together until the granules have dissolved.

Next, I popped on some old unwanted clothing (don't want bleach ruining your good clothes!), wrapped a towel around my shoulders and slipped on the gloves that came with the Bblonde. This will make sure your skin is protected from the harsh, stinging bleach. Then I sectioned my hair, starting from the back, painting the bleach/peroxide mix from the mid-lengths to the ends with the tinting brush. Once each section is complete, create another section and repeat. There's no need to be precise about where you begin from on the mid-lengths, in fact for the best results, you need the opposite of precision! A clean Ombre is a boring Ombre!

Once every section was now covered in the mix, I'd check the development every 15 minutes to see how much has lifted. What you're looking for is a pale yellowy-blonde colour dominating your hair, this is the optimum colour for applying the dyes. After 15 minutes, my hair was a murky orange colour and it wasn't until the 90 minute mark that my hair reached the desired colour (also bleach stops working after 90 minutes anyway).

So after 90 minutes, my hair was mostly a pale, yellowy-blonde but there were still some little patches of orange and canary yellow dotted around. Don't be precious about this, once the dye is applied to these patches, they will be covered and actually add a bit of extra dimension to the look!

I then jumped into the shower and rinsed, rinsed and rinsed again to remove all traces of the bleach.

THE MYTHICAL PROCESS
DSC_6001

First turquoise dye I ever used was La Riche Directions in Turquoise.

After rinsing, I towel dried my hair before giving it a blast with the hairdryer. In my experience, applying dye onto dry hair really intensifies the colour so I want mine bone-dry!

Next, you'll need to pop the towel back over your shoulders and the gloves back on your hands. Again, take your hair in sections and begin applying the dye to the bleached ends.

With Directions I've found the formula is quite thick so you don't need to use as much as you would with Manic Panic which is a little runny in comparison.

Once the dye is on, you leave it on as long as possible. Some hairdressers will say you only need to leave it on for a couple of hours, but personally I like to leave mine on overnight. If you want to take a leaf out of my book, make sure you cover your pillows with a towel otherwise they'll be a different colour when you wake up! Even with a towel, some dye managed to make it's way on to the pillow, but this mermaid wannabe wasn't bothered: I was just too excited to rinse out the dye first thing!

However long you choose to leave it in for, once you're ready just jump into the shower to rinse the excess dye off and voila!

The results:

 TurquoiseOmbreHair6

 DSC_9373

(Ignore the blue strip down the middle, I had La Riche Directions in Midnight Blue on. You can see the Turquoise on the sides)

 TurquoiseOmbreHair5

 TurquoiseOmbreHair4

Hello you mythical creature! - as Laa Laa would call me ;)

Directions' Turquoise is a stunning sea green. It appeared quite teal-ish on my hair, not quite as a true turquoise. The longevity of this is fantastic compared to Manic Panic, it lasts just under 2 weeks before it starts to fade, bearing in mind I shampoo my hair regularly.

When it does begin to fade, it progresses on to a cool-mint sort of colour. But when it fades even further, my hair starts to look like this muddy grey-ish green! DISASTER.

I did not like this at all so I headed for Affleck's Palace in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. I spotted a woman in the CyberDog store who has the most gorgeous, stunning bluey-turquoise hair. I was like: Who and where did you get the dye from?! She introduced me to Manic Panic's Amplified Atmoic Turquoise. I bought it right there, hurtled home and slopped this onto my hair!

 ManicPanicAtomicTurquoise

This is the Amplified version of Manic Panic's Atomic Turquoise. Apparently this is meant to last 30% longer than the original Manic Panic, but I haven't used that so couldn't comment.

As I said above, this is the most stunning turquoise colour I have ever come across! It's more on the blue side of turquoise which was just what I needed. It translates onto the hair as a strong, deep turquoise blue. The colour is far brighter and much more vibrant than Directions with a lot more depth to the colour.

The only downsides are the price (Purchased mine for £14!) and the longevity: this lasts over a week until it starts to fade, but it's a kind of fading I don't mind. It fades into this lovely pastel blue colour with a hint of green which looks quite nymphic.

Anyway, enough rambling, the results?

 TurquoiseOmbreHair

TurquoiseOmbreHair7

TurquoiseOmbreHair2

Who does she think she is? Pffft ;)

I don't know about you but I definitely prefer this over Directions in Turquoise.

The problem is the price, it's just so expensive in comparison. I did a little experimenting though and found that mixing in a bit of blue with Directions' Turquoise really enhances the colour, making it much more blue!

DIYTurquoiseOmbre2

To get that colour enhancement I mixed these two colours together. The end result is something resembling the Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise, but in all honesty it's not quite as awesome. As this mixture begins to fade it becomes increasingly minty but doesn't quite get to the muddy green stage that the Turquoise does on its own.

I've complied a mini FAQ of Questions I've been asked and questions some of you may have:

What colours did you use for the Turquoise?

I use either Manic Panic's Atomic Turquoise or Directions' Turquoise mixed with Crazy Color's Bubblegum Blue. I prefer Manic Panic though as the faded colour still looks pretty good, whereas Directions' looks like pondwater!

Does bleach damage your hair?

Yes, it does! Bleach opens the cuticles and strips out the pigment from your hair. Salons refused to bleach mine as my hair is quite dark. It can be done at home but you need to be extemely careful whilst applying and you need to check the progress frequently. If you are unsure of how your hair will react to bleach, do a strand test on a tiny section of your hair.

Why does your hair look lighter in some pictures?

The dyes have either faded or I've been using Manic Panic's Atomic Turquoise which is more a lighter Turquoise. On some occasions it can appear darker as I've applied the dye again whilst it's just beginning to fade. Putting dye upon dye, it all builds up thus making it look darker.

Is having Turquoise hair high maintenance?

I think it is and it isn't.

The colour will fade quickly as opposed to when you have a natural hair colour (such as chocolate brown or ash blonde). The colour will need to be topped up every few weeks. Hence why I like to use Manic Panic, I personally think the faded colour looks lovely! So in that sense, it's not high maintenance?

Also you need to start caring for your hair and it will most probably be damaged from the bleaching. Lots of conditioners and oils will need to be used!

And expect towels, floors, bed sheets & pillows to be stained! I have been as careful as possible, but this stuff really does transfer onto anything.

How do you care for the hair once it's been coloured?

With me, I struggled to get a comb through my hair. I purchased Johnsons No More Tangles Detangling Spray and a wide toothed comb which helped an awful lot. You need to be gentle with the hair, the last thing you want is major breakage!

Obviously using Hairdryers, Straighteners, Curling Tongs or any other heat-based styling tools doesn't help your hair. But I can't help but use them! After all, I've gone to all that effort to colour my hair beautifully, why shouldn't I straighten and blow dry?!

So what I find does help is slathering my hair in Coconut Oil the night before I shampoo, and leave it in over night. Then in the morning I rinse out the oil and shampoo as normal. Also, another little trick I find is to use hair oils for blow drying. It makes hair look mch healthier than it actually is! I quite like Macadamia's Healing Oil for blow drying, or Coconut Oil.

And of course, condition, condition & condition!

How can you make the colour last longer?

As much as it pains me to say it, shampooing less frequently.

However, if like me, you still want to shampoo often, mix in a bit of the dye with the shampoo and conditioner. With the deep conditioning masks, I've premixed dyes with the conditioner so everytime I'm deep conditioning, the colour is already in there.

Also in terms of shampoos, I've found that using an SLS free shampoo helps an awful lot. The colour seems to fades a lot slower when using this. I quite like L'Oreal's EverPure Colour Care shampoo, because I'm worth it. *cringe*

Heat styling doesn't help much either. But with the advice above, you should be ok.

And there you have it!

Apologies for the über long post, I've received lots of e-mails regarding my hair, and wanted to cover as much of it as posible.

If I've missed anything or if you have any questions, let me know!

OUTFIT: Material Fusion

If you've ever had the (mis)fortune of visiting the Arndale Centre in Manchester, you may or may not know that tucked away at the back there's actually a market. I have to say that I tend to avoid it wherever possible, and that's no slight on the stalls because there's a lot of quality stuff at decent prices. No no, I avoid it because of the smell.

The architect/designer/planner for the Arndale truly deserves a slap to the face with a wet fish, but not just any fish, it should be one from the Arndale Market. That's right, just behind the little food court section there's a massive fishmonger's! And that loveable fishy 'aroma' travels all throughout the market.

On one particular day, boredom got the better of me. I took one last gasp of beautiful, fresh, city-centre air(!) and headed in. Whilst there I came across a gorgeous cropped black lace studded jacket priced at a reasonable £25. But as everyone else seemed to be avoiding the smell of dead fish that day, I was the only person at the stall and the shop assistant was incredibly insistent that I buy it. So much so, I managed to get my hands on it for just £15!

It definitely reminds me of something I'd expect to see in much classier, slightly less whiffier establishment like Zara. Of course, I can feel my debit card struggling to break free from my bag whenever I enter places like Zara, but it seemed perfectly happy to be chip & pinned at this stall.

So anyway, after I washed it (adding in extra Lenor!) I paired it with this champagne metallic vest that I don't recall having ever worn. I think it may have been from Topshop's Autumn/Winter range in 2011 but don't quote me on that! Either way, it was definitely time to give it an airing, coupled with my trusty black velvet shorts that I will not be falling out of love with anytime soon!

I think this might be the first time I've blogged with my hair in a top-knot, I've been experimenting quite a bit with the hair recently to try and mix it up a bit. I really love having my hair done 'Up' at the moment and I'm constantly YouTubing tutorials for new ideas. It's almost fascinating the way the turquoise ends up in big flashes dissecting the black.

I don't think you can ever really beat natural, flowing locks but sometimes it just looks so damn sexy when it's done up, right?

OUTFIT: I Like Short Shorts

If you managed to catch my last outfit of the day you'll already know exactly how much I love velvet, but it's no one-off, oh no. I own a fair few velvet pieces and this pair of burgundy short shorts is amongst my favourites. I could type a big long essay about why but really, just look at the photos and you'll see why!

I know that the short shorts trend has been doing the rounds for a while now, but I was pretty late to jump on to that bandwagon. When I saw these beauties, I just knew it was time to broaden my horizons. No mean feat considering bodycon skirts have been a staple of my wardrobe for the past few years. In a way the shorts aren't so different to the bodycons, both are ridiculously easy to style!

Why was I so late on to the shorts? Well I did try to get into them when they first hit the scene, but I felt like they made my legs look a bit chunky and I dismissed them pretty quickly. But over the past year or so I've toned up and lost a little bit of excess weight, and now they look über flattering!

Prayer beads

Thee necklace technically isn't a necklace, it's a set of prayer beads brought back by my brother from Hajj. I thought they looked too pretty to keep locked away in my flat in a drawer for most of the day, so I started wearing them as a necklace. I even whip them out while on public transport to do my tasbeeh. Now that's functional fashion! ;)

OUTFIT: Red Velvet

Regular readers of mine should know of my dislike of winter by now. I'm not a big fan of the 'Autumn/Winter' ranges on the high street mainly consisting of dark and dreary colours, launched in the dying months of summer as if to prepare us for a dark and dreary few months.

One of the very few good things about Winter and its accompanying clothing range is velvet. Sexy, sultry, smooth velvet. Everybody loves a bit of velvet, particularly in the winter, it just looks so smart, sophisticated and snug. Just a few weeks before Christmas, I was scouting out all of my usual haunts looking for it. I needed my fix! Plus I had a few invites to social soirees and I wanted something different for the occasion.

Lo and behold, I stumbled upon the most gorgeous dress on eBay. It's a ruched corset bodice with a velvet burgundy skirt, all neatly packaged in the form of a dress. I remember swooning over the very same dress no less than a year ago in Topshop, having one of those mental debates where something is truly amazing yet also truly out-of-my-price-range. My heart was saying yes, but my brain spat out it's coffee and exclaimed: "£145???!! FOR A DRESS?!".

So brain won that particular battle and then had the pleasure of saying: "I told you so" just a few months later. My winning bid on this absolute dream of a dress? £18. I was sat on the edge of the bed, button-bashing on the F5 key just praying that nobody would come in and snipe me in the dying seconds. My heart-rate rose frantically. A cold rush of blood to the head saw my fingers type in £50 and click 'Place Bid' before my brain even knew what was going on. The countdown timer surged in to the red. 10. 9. Don't you dare snipe me. 6. 5. OMG I'm gonna win!. 3. 2. 1. Victory.

Following that though, there was the tenseness of waiting for it to come through the post. It's happened to me before, I've won a ridiculously expensive item at a ridiculously low price and received an email from the seller saying they've burnt it with their iron, asking if I still want it. But no. No emails, just an agonising wait. Finally it arrived though. My precious... And it even had the tags on it still.
