Confession: I could never understand the hype surrounding BB Creams. They absolutely burst onto the UK scene last year, with most of the big players funding huge advertising campaigns urging us all to buy these 'miracle' creams. 

I also thought that it was just me that wasn't a fan, working my way through several variations trying to convince myself they were good. Glowing review after glowing review on the blogosphere persuaded me to keep going. 

I tried Garnier, Sleek and even L'Oreal. All of which made my skin look like it wasn't mine. It could have been the lack of shade range, but regardless, BB cream did nothing for me but make my skin dull and strangely unnatural.

So imagine how I felt upon hearing of the next big thing: CC Creams! The cynic in me half expects to see DD Creams, the miraculous breast cream launched just a few months down the line! As yet, my prediction is yet to come true. But anyway, the arrival of the CC Creams initially had me thinking: 'Oh, here we go again!' *roll-eye*

So what exactly is a CC cream?

Well, it stands for Colour Correcting and is more of an evolution of the BB cream. 

I spotted L'Oreal had released 3 types of CC creams: Anti-Dullness, Anti-Redness and Anti-Fatigue. I picked up the latter after swatching it in my local Boots.

 

Tone, Consistency & Application:

Upon swatching, I realised it was a lovely apricot colour with microscopic beads or, as L'Oreal describe it, capsules. Once blended into the skin it transforms into foundation which adapts to my skin tone. Infact, I don't think I could describe this as a foundation, but perhaps a notch down on the thickness scale.

I found this works best for me when applying tiny dots in various areas around the face before using a buffer to work it into the skin. The brush I'm using at the moment is my trusty Illamasqua Highlighter Brush, which is perfect for applying foundation, and gives flawless, air-brushed looking skin. Back to the CC Cream though, and I love how this provides light coverage that adapts to my skin-tone. As many of us Desi girls know, finding the right shade can be troublesome.

After buffing the cream in, the face looking back at me in the mirror appears so much brighter and more awake. And that's before my morning coffee! This is in no small part due to the apricot colour of the cream, which works beautifully with olive skin tones. A word of warning though, ladies with dry skin might want to try before you buy, as this dries to a semi-matte finish . Just for reference, I am a MAC NC37 - NC40 and NARS Sheer Glow - Barcelona.

Formulation, Finish & Longevity:

Although the cream doesn't leave you with an instant glow, it leaves your skin looking more awake and radiant. As the day progresses on, I notice that my skin would gradually begin to glow. Now, my skin type is Oily/Combination so this isn't a great surprise, however I tend to find that with other foundations I need to powder once or twice a day to prevent the oiliness coming to the fore. With this cream I found that I was able to skip the powdering altogether, due to the glow factor.

If you're looking for this to conceal blemishes or under-eye circles, you'll find the light coverage isn't condusive to concealing. Luckily for me, I don't really suffer with dark under-eyes but of course the odd blemish pops up from time to time. For these little nasties, I conceal with my MUFE Full Cover Concealer.

So all in all, this provides you with light coverage, evens your skin tone and leaves a natural looking finish. My skin is relatively clear, so this has worked perfectly for me in achieving that 'Nude' look. I can see this quickly becoming a part of my morning routine for a long time to come (Until EE Cream comes out anyway!), particularly in the summer when I need super light coverage and don't fancy applying anything heavy.

From the Archives: FACE - NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

Hello hello! 

A little while back I took some photos for a review my 'Holy Grail' Foundation but sadly I seemed to have misplaced one of the 727476327 SD cards I own. Finally, I found it the other day. On my other laptop, ha!

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation? What can I say? I've been using this for well over a year and that in itself says quite a lot about just how good this really is. I purchased mine in the shade 'Barcelona'. Funnily enough, while in Barcelona recently I was foundation-less and went bare faced.

At the make up counter, I was initially matched to 'Syracuse' which in my opinion, was faaar too dark for me. This is why I rarely ask for, and always reject, assistance at Make-up counters. I'm sorry but if I want to look like an Oompa Loompa then I'll ask for it, okay? 

Back to the foundation, the shade Barcelona has peachy undertones, perfect for folks that are between NC37-NC40 in MAC and have uneven skin tone. This definitely offers some form of correction and makes skin look as even as possible. Once I've applied the foundation, it actually appears to adjust to my skin tone, like magic! Any uneven skin tone I have seems to almost vanish.

For those of you who simply cannot be bothered reading the rest, check below for the summarised, bulleted bit, I can imagine this will come out being rambly, haha. 

Here's what NARS have to say about it:

Tone, Consistency and Application:

The tone is quite warm, almost golden brown looking with a slight peach tint to it as mentioned above. The consistency is quite runny but don't let that fool you in to applying layers and layers. I either apply this with the fingers or my ELF Studio Powder Brush. I use my fingers for when I do my make up in the morning for work or the weekend and only need 1 pump! FYI, you need to buy the pump seperately. 1 pump is enough to cover my entire face as luckily, my skin is relatively clear and don't need as much coverage and like it to look as natural as possible.

For special occasions or going out, I use 2 pumps for that 'done up' look without it looking cakey.

 

Formulation, Finish and Longevity:

The formulation is definitely buildable and it blends like a dream. When blending either with fingers or a brush, it seems to melt into the skin without settling into pores and leaves you with a flawless look.

I'd have to say even though it's named "NARS Sheer Glow", there is nothing Sheer about this foundation unless you use a small amount. This gives medium to full coverage if you use the usual 2 pumps (as with most foundations). Even with the 2 pumps this feels incredibly light on the skin, pretty much the exact opposite of MAC's Studio Fix Fluid. 

For those days where I get the odd spot, I find I don't need to use concealer which is a bonus! That's how awesome this stuff is. Once I've applied it, my skin looks incredibly natural, looks super skin-like and looks incredibly ORGASMIC! The glow it gives it just enough without looking like an oil slick.

 NARS recommends this foundation for peeps with Normal to Dry skin and I totally understand as to why, by midday my skin looks super glowy, maybe a little too glowy for some folk. But a dusting of powder fixes that.  For those of you looking for a Matte finish, this is not the foundation for you. With this, skin looks hydrated and dewy. did I already mention that?

The longevity of this is absolutely fantastic! I find it lasts throughout my whole day and at the end of it, you find your skin looks dewy providing that you've dusted a little powder on top. However skin does still look stunningly flawless.

Would I re-purchase?

I already have. I can't look back now.

Although in between I have tested out other foundations such as Christian Dior's Diorskin Nude Fresh Glow Hydrating Make Up in shade 040. Yep, as much as I love NARS, the beauty junkie within me can't stop experimenting with others brands, ha!

Diorskin gives the same finish as NARS but not enough coverage which I'm not too bothered about, however, the shade is not for those with uneven skin tone, it will not attempt to correct it. It's more for people that have almost perfect looking skin.

What I love most about NARS Sheer Glow is the shade Barcelona. For women of colour, I too share the pain of the lack of colour range out their for us. Sure, while MAC, Bobbi Brown, and many others brands now have a huge colour selection but they only 'almost' match, and for me that's just not good enough.

So congratulations NARS. You've finally hit the spot.

Priced at £29.50. Some would say it's on the pricey side, but as I use one pump, this foundations lasts me an age. A worthwhile investment if you ask me!

To summarise:

Pros:

• Medium to full coverage that looks like actual skin, yet provides enough coverage
• Finish looks skin-like, dewy and most importantly FLAWLESS
• Provides you with even looking skin if you've chosen the right shade. The peachy undertones in Shade Barcelona helped even out some of the uneveness
• This does not oxidise like MAC's Studiofix Fluid
• Does not contain SPF, perfect for photographs to avoid the white cast some SPF'd foundations can give
• Longevity is excellent, at the end of the day, skin looks dewy yet FLAWLESS
•  Blends into skin seamlessly and does not settle into pores.
• Can be used on Oily/Combination skin in my opinion. Providing that you set your make up with a bit of powder
• Feels light on the skin

Cons:

•  Priced at £29.50, some would argue this is on the expensive side. But if you use let's say a pump at a time, this should last you a while.
• May not be suitable for Oily skin typed folks. It may make you look 'too glowy' that some percieve as 'Shine' but can easily be fixed with some powder
• Does not contain SPF. Also a pro but for those of you looking for SPF in your foundation, this is not for you. 
• It does not come with a pump. You will need to purchase this. I bought mine for £3.00 from the NARS Counter in Selfridges.

Now, as I've already talked about the foundation, thought I may as well show you what else I'm wearing, and no I'm not about to go all pervy on you... I mean my make up silly! ;)

MAC Eyeshadow in Beauty Marked

 

Isn't she just beautiful? However, I do know that others are disappointed with this. It looks purple in the pan but upon application it looks black/charcoal with hints of glitter in. I personally do not mind this. Sometimes I use this as a wash all over the lid or in the crease.

 

In this case, I've used it in the crease and it doesn't appear to be purple toned.

Rimmel Colour Show Off Lipstick in Kiss Me

I heart this lippie. It's a semi matte lipstick with amazing pigmentation but fades throughout the day, they don't call touch ups touch ups for nothing. The colour is absolutely gorgeous though. It's pink with coral undertones.

Unfortunately, Rimmel have discontinued the Colour Show Off range, so I turned to my best friend, eBay. They sell these for around £2.50. Bargain! 

 

And there you have it! I applaud those of you that managed to make it this far, this post is rather lengthy. 

But yes! All in all, NARS Sheer Glow is my HG foundation. I think I'd cry if they discontinued it. NARS, I plead you, please do not let this happen!

REVIEW: Bobbi Brown Natural Finish Foundation

Hello hello!

This foundation whore is back for another review of lets guess, errm, foundation! Ahaha.

I for one am SUPER GLAD this week is finally over. It's been one hell of a week. And for those of you that follow me on Twitter will know what's been going on...

But yes, it's finally over and I am going to have a seriously well earned chilled out weekend. :)

Through all my woes, there one thing that stuck by me. That's right, Bobbi Brown's Natural Finish Foundation. Ha!

It's true. This foundation is truly long lasting.

This was on my list to buy months ago. And I'm glad I finally got my hands on it.

So what do I want from a foundation? I want close to spot on shade, I want it long lasting, I want something that will make me look as shine-free as possible, and last but not least, I want to avoid that dreaded white cast you get in flash photography. *shudders*.

In my quest for my foundation Holy Grail, I've been through few a fair few brands, formulae and shades. While a few have raised my hopes and made my heart flutter momentarily, they have agonisingly ticked three of the boxes and just when I think: "I've found it!" they've delivered crushing blows and demolished my hopes. *sad face*

I expected Glam-X to give me a nigh-on perfect shade & prevent the flashback photo face. And it did, but the longevity was awful and it felt like crap on my face. At that point I was so used to MAC Studiofix, I didn't even realise that formulation was such a big deal.

MAC Studiofix fluid's forumulation was a dream! It lasted ages, I didn't need to apply much powder throughout a full working day and I'd still have a radiant 'glow'. Sounds perfect, no? Yeah, but the colour wasn't ME. NC37 was the closest match, but when I was tanned I'd use NC40.

In reality though, I feel I'm inbetween those shades. Why have MAC decided to just skip from 37 to 40? Where is NC38 & NC39? GAAH. Also, the colour is not warm enough. And as I've said before in my Glam-X post, MAC's NW range is waayy too orange. I want a bit of warmth, not orange, pfft.

Bobbi Brown was my last resort, I never paid too much attention to them as they didn't seem as fashionable as MAC or NARS. But I'd read that their foundations were yellow-based and more suited to Asian skin tones and formulations for all skin-types. What was there to lose? (Other than money!)

I did have some issues at the beginning getting matched at the counters. They initially matched me to a 5.5 Warm Honey but this was way too dark. Why do make up artists have a habit of doing this?! I asked for foundation, not a bloody bronzer! I say this time and time again. After much ado (long story), I managed to get hold of some samples of lighter shades. And within those samples, beaming out at me with it's golden aura, was 4.25 Natural Tan.

There were many forumulations to choose from, in the end I went for the Natural Finish Foundation as it was oil free which is more suited for my oily/combination skin.

Here is what Bobbi Brown have to say about it:

"Oil-free, all-day wear so you'll have soft-matte, even-looking skin without having to pile on powder throughout the day. Made with sponge-like powders absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin, while emollients lock in moisture to ensure skin remains perfectly balanced. Transfer-resistant formula helps create a barrier against heat and humidity for 8 hours of wear. Even in the most humid climates, makeup stays in place. And like all of Bobbi's foundations, the

shades are yellow-based for a natural look. Perfect for oily and normal/combination skin."

Sounds lush.

TONE, CONSISTENCY & APPLICATION

Looking at the picture above, it is immediately apparent it is warmer than NC37 and is clearly not orangey. The consistency is quite runny. But not as runny MAC's Face & Body, think NARS Sheer Glow. And it blends seamlessly into the skin easily.

Through trial & error I've came to the conclusion that this goes on much better with fingers or my MAC 109 brush. At first I used to use my ELF powder brush but realised I needed to use 3 pumps! and yes, guys, it comes with a pump, woop!

Can you see the foundation being soaked up? Which explains why the foundation didn't show up much on my skin. Big apologies to Nazneen to whom I recommended to use ELF's Powder brush for her BB foundation. Sorry, girl! The brush is great for buffing in powder :)

FORMULATION, FINISH, & LONGEVITY.

Two pumps was enough for me, one pump would have left me with sheer coverage. It is definitely buildable but it doesn't cover imperfections such as scars as well as Studiofox Fluid. If you do want to build it up, you'd need to let it dry first then apply another layer on top.

My skin at the moment is relatively clear (touch wood) but as I do have the odd scar on my cheek I dab on my Make Up Forever Full Cover concealer to cover any imperfections.

One thing is for sure, the finish does look natural like it says on the bottle. It dries to a semi matte finish so it doesn't look shiny, although throughout the day I notice my skin begins to look much dewier, probably due to my natural oils breaking through. But it doesn't get to the point of looking shiny. At times I get a bit self-conscious and just want to look flat out matt, so I'll dust a bit of MAC's Prep & Prime powder on top.

Another thing I've noticed with this is that it is probably the best foundation I've tried for hyperpigmentation. I've got quite a bit of pigmentations around my temples and around the mouth and this really helps even it out without looking grey.

It also contains SPF15. And you know SPFs can leave that horrid white cast in flash photography, but in this case, it doesn't!

In case you're wondering, I'm wearing MAC's Chatterbox on ze lips, obvs. Laaav it!

My skin looks dewy & the foundation is still on even though the picture was taken at night. Just goes to show how long lasting this foundation really is. Also, doesn't it just look like real skin instead of looking 'too done'?

WOULD I REPURCHASE?

Absolutely. It cost £28 but I am happy to pay for a foundation that actually lives up to it's claims and matches my skin tone as close to real. And if my skin carries on behaving, then this is the foundation for me. I love that it minimises the look of hyperpigmentation without looking like you just shoved the wrong foundation shade on it. Is this holy grail material? Probably. I wouldn't say it's perfect but certainly close. The only downside is that it doesn't cover scarring as well as MAC's Studiofix Fluid.

I wouldn't recommend this foundation to anyone that has problematic skin, acne scarring or skin that needs heavy coverage. As this is a light foundation. But it's great for evening out skin tone.

EOTD - Overdone eyeliner and coloured pencils.

It's been a while hasn't it? I do apologise. It's a mish mash of lazyness & busyness.

Most of you know that I love top eyeliner, and that I ALWAYS flick it out. Well, lately, I have been kinda overdoing it.

Normal top liner was starting to bore me, so I just started to paint on more and more eyeliner until eventually I ended up where I am now. And to make it more interesting than box standard thick top liner, I applied a coloured liner onto my lower lashline.

Lately my weapons of choice have been:

Urban Decay's 'Liquid Liner' - It has a brush applicator and the formulation is all you could ask for, it's thick, smooth and doesn't fade or smudge. Perfect.

Famous Eye Liner in Turquoise - I've never took this company seriously, mainly because it appears to be unheard of and the price wasn't exactly pocket friendly for a drugstore brand. But during my trip to Superdrug this week, I found this in the bargain bin for £2.00! I wonder if this brand is being discontinued? ANYWAY, I was quite surprised with this eyeliner, the pigmentation is quite vibrant AND it lasts all day! And it comes off easily with my olive oil cleanser.

So with these two combined, this is what I came up with:

Lovely. It's kinda like Amy Winehouse's signature eyeliner, not as thick and with a splash of colour.

And there you have it!

Neutral FOTD using Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes

Sometimes when I wake up, I feel like being really adventurous with my make-up and covering my eyelids with bright, bold colour or wearing a brash, in-yer-face lipstick so that I really stand out from the crowd and think "Yeeeah!". Ok, that last part's probably just me! Yep.

Most of the time though, I prefer to play it a bit safer and use neutrals. Neutrals are safe, they are my go-to shades, they are flesh-toned pinks, caramel browns, they are the staple of any woman's make-up collection, they are our secret weapons for giving the illusion of well-defined big beautiful eyes.

Funnily enough, this post features a palette called "Big Beautiful Eyes" from Benefit. And guess what? It's a neutral palette! Haha, clever.

A closer look at Big Beautiful Eyes by Benefit..

Oooooh, lap up those neutrals ladies & gents! Needless to say, I didn't bother using those naff brushes. Instead I opted for my little finger to dab on the concealer, MAC 239 shading brush for lid colour, 219 Pencil brush for the crease & 224 to soften the edges.

So yeah..

Drum roll, please. The results are in. And here they are..

Please excuse my brows, they deperately need threading. 

Biting my bottom lip trying to look all sexy... Fail.

I lovelovelove this look. Yay for neutrals!

MAC Viva Glam Lady Gaga & Cyndi Lipstick

Lately, I've been such a lipstick whore. I decided I must stop buying nudes everytime I go shopping. I must admit, I do own a fair amount of different coloured lipsticks but I have faar too many nudes (no you can't have them, they're mine!)

When I heard the hype about Lady Gaga & Cyndi releasing a baby pink and a coral red, I knew I had to try these AND I can justify buying them! Clever thinking..

Yes, I've read that many people find it difficult to pull off the Lady Gaga lipstick. I thought I would be one of the lucky few. I went into my local MAC store and it was sold out, no testers available either! One of the lovely ladies at the counter told me they are still available online. I dropped everything and rushed home to buy it, hoping there'd be some left for little me!

Luckily there were still some left on the website so I quickly placed my order. When it arrived

I could barely contain my excitement.

For the record, I never had the chance to swatch them. Will I ever learn? Probably not. ANYWAY, what did it look like on me?

Meh.

Looks okay in the pictures, but in real, it looked blue toned which is a big no-no for warm toned skins (I'm NC37. NC40 when tanned). I found the first coat of the this lipstick is quite sheer. You need to layer it on with 2-3 coats. But yes! This does not suit me at all. Sigh... GaGa, I'm disappointed.

Onto Cyndi..

I love it! Can you tell? It felt glossy and I layered 2 coats on. MAC describe is as a "light reddish coral". I can detect a slight hint of coral in it, but it's more reddy.

Have any of you purchased the Gaga or Cyndi lipsticks? What did you think of them? Any recommendations on how I can make GaGa more wearable?

Barry M Nail Paint haul & Lip Paint in 147 Peachy Pink

I've recently been obsessing over Nail polishes. Especially Opi. But it ended up becoming a quite expensive obsession...

I went on the hunt for some cheap polishes until I stumbled across Superdrugs 3 for 2 offer on all cosmetics. I came across Barry M Nail Paints. The colours are just unique.

I'm currently wearing Cobalt Blue on one hand and Turquoise on the other, how cool am I? Haha. I don't find it streaky applying them, 2 coats is enough, and it's lasted at most 2 days for me until it started chipping.

I also purchased the Lip Paint in 147 Peachy Pink.

I didn't think this would suit my NC37-NC40 skin tone. But when I tested it I was quite impressed, it just appeared to be... well.. peachy pink! And looked amazing on my skin tone. The only thing about this Lip paint is that it's super matt and really drying. If you apply this over dry lips, it will show up the flaky skin, not a good look. Only use this when you've exfoliated and moisturied your lips.

I feel I need to inject my life with more Barry M goodies. I can't believe I haven't even tried the Dazzle Dusts yet. Suggestions people!

10 Products I'm loving...

Okay, so I've been loving these products lately and have been using them on a daily basis.

1) Nars Eye Contour Brush - The brush is sooo soft, apparently made out of squirrel and goat hair (eeeep). Use this to sweep colour under my eyes.

2) Mac (Frost) eye shadow in "Satin Taupe" - A beautiful taupe brown, a nice everyday neutral colour. I pair this with ELF's "Celebrity" or MAC's "Brulee". It looks like I've not used much of this but I have been sweeping it onto the crease ever so lightly for work. This is defo a staple and would flatter most skin tones.

3) Nars Sheer Glow Foundation - Mine is in shade "Stromboli". I would compare this to a MAC NC37 to 40 but obvs with a lot more yellow in it.It's quite runny so it's pretty blendable. Dries to a semi matte finish. Doesn't break me out. Leaves me with a radiant glow, but by lunch time, it tends to make me look slightly oily. So I need to dust on some Prep & Prime powder to sort it oooot.

4) MAC Prep & Prime Transparent powder - Saves me from looking oily! I set my foundation with this. Blures out large pores, so it does kinda give that "HD" effect. Makes skin feel silky.

5) GOSH Stippling Brush - This is a nice brush for blending foundation. Gives more of a flawless look than my MAC 190 brush. Not bad considering I got it free from Superdrug's 3 for 2 mix & match offer. Some of the white bristles have come out though :(

6) MAC Vanilla Pigment - A versatile colour! It appears white, but once applied to the skin, it leaves a golden sort of sheen. I usually press this onto my brow bone. Can be used as a highlighter on the high cheek bone.

7) MAC Moisturelush Eye Cream - This has a buttery forumula but my skin just drinks this up! It contains light reflecting particles in it so it left me with a radiant under eye area. I don't think it lifts or firms the area but meh, moisturies it well. A little goes a long way, should last me a good few months.

8) MAC (Lustre) Freckletone Lipstick - A peachy nude. I am such a fan of nude lipsticks, and this has by far become my fave nude lipstick of all time. It is the most flattering shade for my skin tone without looking a zombie. Olive skin tones beauts, you must own this shade!

9) OPI in Glamour Game - A sophisticated shimmery champagne colour. It difficult to describe, there's a lot going on in the colour. There's some silver, gold, a bit of pink, a few specks of goldy coppery bits. Lovely colour. It needs about 3 coats. Lasts about 3 days for me until the chipping...

10) MAC 224 Brush - I ADORE this brush. Incredibly versatile! Blending out harsh edges of eye shadows, applying concealer, dusting on highlighters onto the brow bone and tear duct. Definately a must have for all beauty junkies. Although it would be interesting to find a cheaper dupe...
